—— NIPPONIA HOTEL Hakodate Port Town
In Hakodate, time flows like the tide, slowly back and forth between the city and the port.
This was a crucial historical stage during the late Edo period and was one of Japan's first port towns to open to the outside world. Since the port's opening, Hakodate has seen the convergence of cultures and goods from around the world. Its unique character is shaped by its red-brick warehouses, Western-style houses, churches, and still-active fishing port.
Hakodate was once ranked among the "three most beautiful night views in the world," alongside Hong Kong and Naples. Today, the historic district, designated an Important Preservation Site for Traditional Buildings , still boasts rows of Ijinkan (traditional Chinese architecture) and century-old buildings, bearing witness to the port town's prosperity and transformation.
Nine rooms in a red brick warehouse
NIPPONIA HOTEL Hakodate Minato is located in the heart of this historic district, the Akareng Warehouses . The moment we enter the warehouses, it's like stepping into a timeless space.
This century-old building was formerly a factory specializing in processing Hakodate's specialty , gagome kelp . Renowned for its uniquely sticky texture and high nutritional value, gagome kelp was once a key export from the port, establishing Hakodate as a key player in international trade.
That day, Ms. Nanshan led us through the museum. She explained the story of every corner with familiarity, from the preserved red brick exterior and thick wooden beams to the lobby's inkjet-shaped chandelier, which seemed to freeze the ocean's breath in the air. Kelp-inspired art installations along the walls also quietly told the story of the building's past and present.
Guest Rooms and Light and Shadow
There are only 9 guest rooms in the hotel, with three different levels, each retaining the warmth of red bricks and wood.
In the morning, soft light streams in from the harbor, while at night, the murmur of the aircraft and the harbor can be heard. Some rooms feature desks, perfect for a quiet workday while traveling. The minibar offers Hakodate beer and local liquor, paired with the chef's specially crafted seasonal snacks, allowing you to experience the flavors of the harbor town even from within your room.
Between everyday and extraordinary
A stay at NIPPONIA HOTEL Hakodate Minato is more than just a lodging experience; it's an immersive journey into port town life. Here, Western and Japanese influences blend seamlessly, past and present intertwine, and travelers harmoniously connect their everyday selves with their journeys.
As you leave, stepping out of the red brick warehouse and looking back, you'll discover that the city's character mirrors its port—softly accepting the outside world, yet tenaciously preserving its own identity. Perhaps this is what makes Hakodate so captivating.
